The different types of Blackjack

There are a few common variations of Blackjack that you’ll find at Canadian online casinos. These include:

American Blackjack

One of the most common variations you’ll find is the American variation of Blackjack and very common in places like Las Vegas. The most simple version pits the dealer against two players, and whoever gets closest to 21 wins. The house edge of the game is determined by how many decks are used.

European Blackjack

With the European version, dealers don’t get their facedown or ‘hole’ card until the players have made their choice on how they are going to play. You’ll also find slightly more limitations in different areas of the game.

Multihand

Once you’ve got a grip on how to play, multi-hand could be a good option. As the name suggests, you play multiple hands using traditional rules. This adds a bit more excitement and a faster pace to the game.

Live dealer Blackjack

Thanks to the creation of live casino games, you can enjoy the full casino experience from the comfort of your sofa at home with whatever drinks you like. You’ll find solid games of Blackjack with real dealers and interactive bets.

Strategies to help you succeed

Onto the main event: some quick strategies to help you increase your odds at winning Blackjack:

Double-check the dealer’s card

If the dealer’s face-up card is of higher value – such as a 9, a 10 or a face card – then ideally you want to get your hand up to at least a 17. A tip many pros give out is to assume the dealer has a face card or a 10 in the hole (face down).

Split your pairs, except for a 10

When you get dealt a hand of pairs, you can split them to have two separate hands. This effectively doubles your chances of winning. You’ll have to double your wager, since you need to bet on the split hand, and you’ll have to play out one hand at a time.

Avoid side bets

Many different versions of Blackjack allow for side bets to be wagered, adding a bit of spice to the gameplay. These side bets often increase the house edge though, so it’s often not worth placing the bet.

Never split 10’s

This is such a well-known rule there are plenty of jokes about it – it’s almost become a meme in the Blackjack community. Even if you know the dealer has a weak hand, two 10s is an incredibly strong hand and your chances of topping that with a blackjack is just not worth splitting them!

Don’t take insurance

Some variations of blackjack let you take insurance if the Blackjack dealer has a face-up ace. The reason for this is in case the dealer pulls out Blackjack, you get some of your losses compensated. The chances of a dealer getting Blackjack are slim though and it makes taking insurance not worth the extra bet.

Claim the best bonuses you can

Many online casinos in Canada will come with a bonus that is usable on online blackjack. The most common bonus type that you can use will be a matched deposit, which will bump up your account balance with some bonus money. Make sure you double-check the terms and conditions though, as the bonus weighting for working through the wagering requirements is usually lower on Blackjack.
