With it’s amazing wildlife, stunning landscapes and wonderful people, Canada is one destination you’ll never forget. If you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip here, you need to know what to tick off your list. To give you a helping hand, here are five uniquely Canadian experiences that you’ll never forget.
Wake up to Niagra Falls
The majestic Niagra Falls is one attraction that makes it on to everyone’s itinerary for Canada. But how can you make the experience special when there are hoards of tourists lining the viewing platform? Here’s an idea: splash out on a room at the nearby Fallsview Casino Resort and take in the mesmerising sight of the falls over breakfast. This is a pricier option for backpackers but it makes a great one-off treat for those celebrating birthdays or anniversaries on the road. After all, it’s not every day you get to wake up to an awe-inspiring bird’s eye view of one of the natural wonders of the world.
Canoe the Moraine Lake
The Moraine Lake in Banff, Alberta, is one of the most stunning natural spots in Canada and one you’d be mad to omit from your bucket list. It’s situated in the Valley of Ten Peaks and sits at 1885m above sea level. In summer you can canoe through the beautiful deep blue water as you marvel at the surrounding sights of Mount Fay and the Fay glacier. The unusually blue colour of the lake is caused by the silt that’s deposited into the lake by melting glaciers. If canoeing isn’t your thing, don’t worry - there is plenty to keep nature lovers occupied . Several hiking trails surround the lake or you can simply climb the neighbouring rock pile which acts as an ideal vantage point for photography and simple contemplation. You can also fish in the lake from July to October if you have a national park license. In September, the lake is the perfect place from which to admire the changing colours of the Fall leaves.
See polar bears in their natural habitat
It’s no secret that the polar ice caps are melting and that our children’s children may live in a world where polar bears have become extinct. A trip to Canada offers the opportunity to see polar bears in the wild whilst they still exist outside of zoos. These majestic creatures deserve our respect, and as the world’s largest land predator they should only be viewed from a safe distance. However, there are lots of tour companies and hotels that offer packages for polar bear spotting to visiting tourists. Churchill, the “polar bear capital” is the ideal place to see polar bears and there are about 1,200 bears passing through the region every year. However, you can only see the bears during October and the beginning of November; after that the bears head out to the ice flats to hunt for food. So, plan your trip well in advance. Once the polar bears have moved on you can still see plenty of wildlife in the Churchill area, including Arctic foxes and Beluga whales.
See the Toronto Blue Jays in action
A popular past time in the country of Canada is the sport of Baseball and with just one team in the top league (Major League Baseball) across the countryto root for, support is rife for the Toronto Blue Jays. The regular season starts in March and runs right the way until early October, giving you ample opportunity to take in some home-runs at the Rogers centre. The Blue Jays often head the American League betting with the likes of Bet365 , so you are sure to get your money’s worth if you are breaking your backpacking-bank to take in the baseballing action.
