10 Things To Do In Tofino, British Columbia

Tofino is a cute little surf town located on Vancouver Island. It’s a popular destination for backpackers, surfers, hippies, and nature lovers. It reminds me a bit of Byron Bay, Australia if it had a baby with Raglan, New Zealand. With long stretching beaches, consistent surf breaks, countless hiking trails, there are tons of things to do in Tofino.

Surfing in Tofino

Tofino is one of the most popular surf destinations in British Columbia. Surfing is one of the best things to do while visiting Tofino. With several Surf Schools nearby, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn how to surf if you’re new. If you’re already comfortable on a board, head out to Long Beach, Chesterman Beach, or Cox Bay. Check with the locals before heading out, and make sure you hop online to check the surf reports. Or you can always do it the old fashion way and just walk down to the beach.

Water Taxi To The Islands

Grab a water taxi and head to some of the smaller islands for some exploring and hiking, or simply to get out and take in the nature and feel the remote isolution of these beautiful west coast islands. Water Taxi’s aren’t too expensive, just be sure to bring water and snacks as you won’t find much on the other islands.

Pop into Tacofino for amazing tacos, or head to theWildside Grill for some amazing fish & chips. Or fancy it up a bit at Shelter or Jacks Waterfront Pub. Tofino has a slower pace than the rest of Canada, so don’t be in too big of a hurry. Enjoy every bite, take your time, and take in the people watching or nature views.

Hot springs cove.

Even if it’s pouring out and freezing cold, Hot Springs Cove is simply amazing. Nothing beats the warmth and serenity of Hot Springs Cove. It can get crowded during the busy summer months, so consider visiting early in the morning. If you’re planning on having a cold one in the Hot Springs, make sure it’s in an unlabeled plastic mug. Something that won’t shatter. Make sure you clean up after yourself as well. The Hot Springs Cove is one of the most popular things to do in Tofino. Make sure you check it out! It’s a nice little hike out. Check out my post on the Best Hot Springs in British Columbia.

Whether you’re surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing, kayaking, or simply swimming. The water encompasses nearly every one of the best things to do in Tofino. Head to Surf Sister Surf School, Tofino Surf School, or Pacific Surf School and get up to speed on everything you need to know. I recommend taking some lessons for first timers. You’ll have a much more fun time.

Fishing Charters in Tofino

If you’re into fishing, there are a couple of fishing charters running throughout the tourist season. Head into town and you shouldn’t have an issue tracking down someone who’s keen to show you the ropes. It’s best to go with a group, so if you’re camping consider asking your neighbours if they might want to join. Heck, you might even catch dinner for the night.

Eagle Aerie Gallery

If you’re a fan of art, culture, and anything First Nations, you’re going to get a kick out of this beautiful gallery. Featuring hundreds of unique pieces from around the area, this is a must see location. I tend to recommend leaving the Galleries for rainy days, but this is one that I think you can squeeze in no matter what the weather is like.

Tonquin Park, Tofino

Tonquin Park has a huge system of trails, and if you’re into hiking should be on your list of places to check out. Very well maintained, it can get a bit busy during the summer months, but you’ll still find that “Tofino Busy” is much much different than “Vancouver Busy”. Despite being a small little part of BC, there is a ton of room to find your own space.
