Linzi, go over to Quebec! insurance is cheap as, and includes being able to take it to USA and other Canadian provinces.

I am from the UK, in Ontario trying to buy a car to do the rest of our backpacking trip around Canada. It’s a nightmare. No insurance company will look at you if you don’t have a Canadian driving licence and an international permit means nothing – don’t bother geting it. You can only drive in Canada for 60 days on your UK licence before you have to transfer to a Canadian one, even though we are not staying here permanently – we are only here temporarily for a year. The Minstry of Transport try to tell you that Canada has a recipricol agreement with the UK, however, as all insurance companies are out to scam you, no-one will insure you unless you have a Canadian licence AND when you do eventually get a Canadian licence (they destroy your UK licence by the way) they will class you as a new driver, not taking into account how long you have been driving back home. Recipricol agreement?! The information on this site with regards to buying and insurance a vehicle is not acurate, it is not that simple. And by the way, like the rest of this country, it’s very expensive.

If you need a permanent address to gain a vehicle registration plate, and your a tourist without one, due to being from outside the country, how do you get the plate?

I am in Ontario, and I found that an international driving permit doesn’t suffice. No insurance company will take you… I am going to Quebec and try my luck there… no e-test or safety test there so a lot cheaper than Ontario!

You can also try craigslist.org and kijiji.ca, both are very popular on the West Coast if your selling vehicles.
