Award Recognition has Newspapers & Radio Talking

As you may have read, I Backpack Canada took home the award for “Best Travel Blog” at the recent GoMedia Marketplace, held in Toronto, Ontario. After arriving back in Halifax (and celebrating with a few friends) I found my inbox surprisingly full. It looks like my recent success had the bigwigs of News and Radio talking. Someone, somewhere, decided “This sounds pretty nifty, let’s have a word with this young chap.”

So what was published about I Backpack Canada. Let’s take a look.

I was given the opportunity to speak with CBC Radio 2’s Drive Time with Richard Terfry. They’ve got this great project called SongQuest, where people from all over Canada nominate their favourite roads in Canada, and an artist from each province / territory will write a song about it. I nominated the Highway to Big Muddy Saskatchewan, famous for bandits, cowboys, and runnin’ from the law. Be sure to check out SongQuest and vote for your favourite roads in Canada.

A few days later I spoke to CBC Radio again, this time with Michelle Hugli-Brass of the CBC Afternoon Edition. Needless to say, these radio interviews scared the pants off me, I prefer writing to talking. Thankfully I didn’t vomit from the pressure while on the phone, so I’m chalking these both up as wins!

**Update – Later this evening, Richard Brown, from Newstalk CJME out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan did a live radio interview with me. Once again, didn’t screw up too bad, aside from confusing my directions (woops!). Fortunately, with the help of my new Macbook Pro, I was able to record the interview…well, most of it! Have a listen.

On top of all of this my hometowns newspaper, the Leader-Post of Regina, Saskatchewan, published an article about I Backpack Canada winning the award for best travel blog on September 15, 2010. It was then picked up by The Star Phoenix, of Saskatoon Saskatchewan, followed by the Calgary Herald. And after a quick search on Google, it appears the Vancouver Sun, The Montreal Gazette, and the Edmonton Journal all picked it up to post on their websites as well. (woo!)

In light of this recognition, I’ve got a lot of work to do. I’ve got some serious writing to catch up on, a whole bunch of travelling left to do, and so much more Canada to see.
